Trafford Planning Department has recently received TWO planning applications for residential development along the canalside – one either side of Edge Lane. One is for 107 apartments, together with a retail outlet, parking and moorings. The other, by Peel Holdings, is to redevelop the Boatyard with 44 apartments and parking.
In our opinion, this is inappropriate and excessive. Stretford needs more local employment and facilities for local people, not expensive apartments for commuters, with additional cars competing with Metrolink car parking and the Trafford Centre Bus.
Sale has the Waterside Centre. Stretford needs a new focus it is vital to maximise the potential of the canal for the benefit of local residents and the overall improvement of Stretford Town Centre. We would encourage Trafford Planning Department to adopt a comprehensive approach to the development of both sides of the canal – possibly to include an integrated transport hub – and to give Stretford a new heart.
If you feel as we do, please make your opinions known to Council Planners as soon as possible. The applications will soon be available to view at Sale Town Hall or on the Council website:

The application numbers are H/69278 and H/OUT/69239.
GREENS DELIVER
Green Councillors on Lancaster Council have objected to proposals for their canalside. They have taken a different approach, which looks to the needs of the local community instead of those of developers. They have provided an alternative green plan:
