Response to Waste Collection and Recycling Strategy
Filed: 14.02.2008

WE WANT

A weekly food waste collection for all households AND flats.

ALL of this food waste and not just 50%, as in Option 2, to be composted.

LOCAL composting, ideally at ward level as opposed to being taken to Trafford Park. In-Vessel Composters such as that used by Fairfield Market, Manchester, could be used and the compost sold back to local householders.

Collection of PLASTIC PACKAGING (yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, etc.) as well as bottles. Other councils do this, so why not Trafford? The Council should be working with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, and perhaps the North West Development Agency, to site plastic recycling plants (making new plastic packaging) in our region.

It may not be necessary but options should be left open on the issue of CHARGING. Whilst we need a comprehensive service in place first and time to encourage everybody to use it, we don’t see why everybody should pay the increasing landfill charges incurred by those who can’t be bothered to recycle…..The legislation requires charges to be revenue neutral, so recyclers would get a reduction whilst non-recyclers would pay extra.

Could the paper/card and plastic/glass/tins be collected weekly? A fortnightly collection requires a lot of storage space and larger containers.
